Which One Of These Songs Is AI?

AI Generated Music is getting good. Really good. But is it indistinguishable from human produced music?

As an experiment, I took one of my songs, Things I Left Behind, and I created an AI version of the track. I made a video playing the AI version and the human produced version side by side.

Can you tell which one is AI and which one is human?

Share your thoughts in the comments.  I'll announce which song is AI on Monday.

the first version sounds more ai.....has less free guitar ..too straight...even lead voice .. ai makes song sound' vanilla'.

Hi Aaron, I do agree, AI is getting really good. Beautiful song by the way. I'm gonna guess Version 1 is human and Version 2 is AI. Looking forward to what others think. See ya on Monday. Happy weekend! ~M

Loved version2. I'd buy it. Felt human. Not number 1.

If #2 is AI we're in trouble.

I despise generative AI, which is out-and-out theft of real, living artists' works, regurgitated and spit back out based on somebody's "prompts". I don't know which of these versions is AI and which isn't. But anytime I do know some music or other art is AI, you can be sure I will have absolutely nothing to do with it.

I'm going with version #2 is NOT AI.

#2 sounds more real seems to have emotion behind the vocals

Just by feeling I like more #2, it sounds more authentic but I can here some artifacts in the background and the drums sound like a loop. So I guess both are AI but the second one is a better model

In the 2nd version your voice sounds different from other songs you've done and posted so I'll say 2 is AI

My money is on #2 as human and my personal preference.

I’d say version 2 is the Ai. I’ve done the same thing with some of my songs. Some great results

Version 2 has emotion in the vocal. So I'm going to say that's the real one. The first one was good but had a 1 note quality to it. And had an overproduced kind of sound that sterilized it. At least to my ears.

I think the first one was A!. There seemed to be more depth in the texture in 2.

There's a huge difference between them. Version 1 is too perfect, like someone's lined up all the emotions and each one comes in with the instrument and plays it's part correctly than goes back to it's corner to allow for the next one. I hope version 2 is human.

Beautiful song, Aaron. I think Version 1 is AI because it's one dimensional and flat. Version 2 is more aurally exciting and full of feeling. Based on the production information I've gotten from you in the past, I'm going with Version 2 as Human. If it's not, then would you please let us in on the prompting you had to do to get it to sound so good :^)?

Thanks to everyone who commented! This was a fascinating experiment and the results suprised me.

The "real" version was the first one, which I recorded in 2017. The second one was the AI version which I rendered in September 2025.

The times they are a changing!

Scarey stuff - This is after the fact, but I too would have believed version 2 was the non-AI recording. Version 2 is more energetic, adds nice harmonies for building up the choruses and bridge... I have to say it feels more 'human' in its approach than version 1 does - which as many commented seems somewhat lifeless in comparison. - The results of your challenge have kindled my interest in using AI on some of my recordings to see if it can point the way to arrangement / production improvements.

Absolutely version two is human.

I can hear the difference within the first three or four strokes of the guitar.

The Voice is also very articulate and more real.

Version two is AI, generated in September 2025. The first version is the human produced one recorded in 2017.

I'm a little late to the party but I promise I listened to both tracks before reading the comments!
I guessed correctly, partly because right at the start of version 2, the guitars were shifting between the left and right speaker so quickly that it immediately felt 'wrong' and a human producer would probably not have inflicted that confusion on a listener's ears.

Plus, it seemed more polished overall whilst the 'human' version 1 had a more real 'human' quality..
Thank you for discussing this very important aspect of music making. It scares the hell out of me, and usually I can pick out Ai almost immediately and steer well clear as I dislike its implications...
